Body found in Costa Rica is likely missing Florida woman

Authorities said a 32-year-old Nicaraguan man, identified as Bismark Espinosa Martinez, has been arrested in connection with the slaying of Carla Stefaniak, 36, of Hallandale Beach. The body was wrapped in plastic bags and half-buried in a mountainous, wooded corner of the resort's property.

Walter Espinoza, head of Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Department, was quoted by AP news agency as saying the Florida woman had died of head trauma.

Espinoza told WSVN that all data gathered in the case shows the body is her's, but officials are waiting to compare the fingerprints with Federal Bureau of Investigation records. He told NBC News dental records as well as fingerprints are being checked before the family can enter the morgue to view the body.

Jaime called Stefaniak's family, then the US Embassy in Costa Rica.

"The family has not confirmed the identity by viewing or providing DNA samples", the family's Facebook page noted.

Costa Rican authorities found stains inside the apartment where Stefaniak was staying, "which are compatible with blood and which will be submitted to further investigation and comparison", Espinoza said. Test results f from evidence taken from both rooms revealed trace amounts of blood, he said.

"Someone was interviewed at the Airbnb and said she left for the airport at 5 a.m., and the flight was much later".

"Last time we heard from her was 11/27 around 8 pm".

Mario Caicedo, a brother of Stefaniak, Mario Caicedo, is in Costa Rica. In recent years, reviews have been mainly negative.

A Gofundme account said she was last heard from around 8pm on November 27 and she didn't show up for her 1pm flight home the next day.

Meanwhile, Stefaniak's family are now on their way to the Central American country. So Stefaniak dropped off the rental vehicle and Antonieta at the airport, then ordered an Uber to take her to her AirBnB where she planned to stay until her flight the next day.

"Stefaniak dropped Burton off at the airport in San Jose on November 27 and returned their rental auto".

According to Gardner, Stefaniak texted her family updates and photos throughout the late afternoon.

"Carla is very communicative". "Carla is the person that wakes up and opens her eyes and looks at her phone and literally looks at Instagram and whatsapp". Her companion flew home to Tampa a day early to get a better deal on the airfare, Jaime said.

Airbnb says it has reached out to offer its support not only to Stefaniak's family, but also to law enforcement in Costa Rica and in the US.

"Since 2013, Villa Le Mas has operated a small vacation rental facility located at San Antonio, Escazu, Costa Rica".

Stefaniak's co-workers said she was an excellent employee who could get along with anyone.

"All the data we've compiled points to this being her; however, we want a determination that is more precise, more technical and more scientific", said Espinoza. "Carla wouldn't wake up at 5 a.m. for nothing".

They said she had traveled there to celebrate her 36th birthday.
