Gruden added: "He's been talked about and discussed, but we'll probably go in a different direction".
"In order to utilize someone like Colin Kaepernick's skill set, you're talking about a whole new group of formations and run concepts", Gruden said.
The team failed to extend Kaepernick an invite to their workout a few weeks ago before signing Mark Sanchez.
McCoy broke his right fibula during the team's 28-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Sanchez, whom Washington signed in mid-November after starting quarterback Alex Smith went down with a season-ending leg injury, entered the game after backup QB Colt McCoy also went down with a season-ending leg injury. Sanchez being with [offensive coordinator Matt] Cavanaugh helped out a lot. "Now it goes from contingency plan to game plan", Sanchez said.
Sanchez had only about 20 percent of the Redskins' playbook at his disposal when he replaced McCoy on Monday night. Hard to believe for a team who had a quarterback in the back field who hadn't thrown a pass in a regular-season game since January 1, 2017. Gruden said there's a chance McCoy would be ready for the December 30 finale vs. Philadelphia. He filed a grievance against the National Football League past year, saying team owners colluded to keep him off rosters.
