Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has made no secret of the desire to sign a new midfielder to act as cover and competition for Italian midfielder Jorginho.
Cagliari's Nicolo Barella and Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Leandro Paredes have both been linked with a move in recent days.
Reports have emerged suggesting that the 30-year-old has been identified as a summer transfer target for Chelsea.
Sarri would have to wait till the summer to explore the possibility of signing Rakitic as the Croatian is expected to drop in the pecking order when Frenkie de Jong arrives from Ajax.
With Netherlands global Frenkie de Jong joining Barcelona from Ajax for an initial £65m fee at the ene of the season, the Spanish side will reportedly need to balance their books by selling at least two players.
For one, the Croatian global is blessed with vast technical quality and is highly proficient when it comes recycling possession and linking up with his teammates.
Barca is thought to be eager to reduce its wage bill, as well as recoup some funds from transfers, and Rakitic, along with Philippe Coutinho and Malcom, is one of the players said to be facing a fight for his future. I know what I can give. "I know who I am", he said.
"I'm very happy here, everyone knows it, most of all the president".
And they could find a far more approachable Barcelona than last summer as it has been claimed that they are open to offers for the Croatian at the end of the season. "I want to enjoy football and Barça".
