Huawei revealed that the Kunpeng 920 scores over 930 points in the SPECint Benchmarks test - "25 percent higher than the industry benchmark" - while offering a 30 percent power efficiency increase over the industry's average.
"Where we see the biggest value for the Kunpeng 920 is in data centers, servers and big data, " William Xu, Huawei's chief strategy marketing officer and a member of the company board, said at a news conference in Shenzhen.
"Huawei has invested patiently and intensively in computing innovation to continuously make breakthroughs", Chief Strategy Marketing Officer William Xu said in the statement.
Industry forecasts predict that aggregate data will expand 18-fold between 2018 and 2025, and artificial intelligence (AI) is driving a tenfold annual growth in computing power, Xu told media at Huawei headquarters. Xu said that the company, despite the recent move, will continue its long-term strategic partnership with Intel and is not a competitor to the USA company's x86 CPUs and servers, but just a complementary.
"We hope to make our cloud service, together with our partners, one of the top five cloud services in the world", he added. Huawei and Intel will continue our long-term strategic partnerships and continue to innovate together.
This puts Huawei in competition with Cavium and Qualcomm, producers of the ThunderX2 and Centriq Arm server processors, respectively, and with Amazon's Graviton CPU, which is only available as part of the EC2 offering on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The new chipset, called Kunpeng 920, is created to go into data centers and will power the company's TaiShan server, which was also launched on Monday. Using the cutting-edge 7nm process, the CPU was independently designed by Huawei based on ARMv8 architecture license. Amazon does not publish exact specifications of hardware used in AWS, generally, though Graviton CPUs are understood to operate at 2.3 GHz with 16 cores, using 2015-era Cortex-A72 designs. GCC has released the Green Computing Consortium Server Technical Standards Report, along with other efforts to build a green open source computing community.
Huawei believes that an intelligent society with all things connected, sensing, and intelligent is underway, and this trend is picking up speeds. In such a context, ARM systems stand out with unique advantages in performance and power consumption... Combining multiple computing architectures for optimal performance becomes a must.
Huawei is looking to continue to grow its technological empire through consumer electronics and cloud computing.
