Jeff Bezos, founder and chairman of Amazon, announced that after 25 years, he and his wife, MacKenzie, have made a decision to get divorced.

It said: "We want to make people aware of a development in our lives".

Jeff Bezos, 54, has a fortune that has soared as high as $160 billion thanks to his stake in Amazon, which again became Wall Street's most valuable company this week, surpassing Microsoft Inc.

"Though the labels might be different, we remain a family, and we remain cherished friends", the statement concludes before being signed "Jeff & MacKenzie". Read the statement in full here.

While Jeff Bezos appears to be resolved to his fate (for all we know), the billion-dollar question remains: did he and MacKenzie come to terms on a prenup at some point in their marriage?

The world's richest couple is splitting up. The couple seemed headed for an amicable split, saying that they "had such a great life together".

"Jeff Bezos will focus on control of his company and will likely elect to maintain the stock and voting rights in the Amazon shares over other assets", Slotnick, who is not representing either Jeff or MacKenzie Besos, said in offering his opinion.

The two had been married for 25 years.

Bezos is now the world's richest person, with an estimated net worth of $137 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

MacKenzie Bezos is a novelist and founded an antibullying organization, called Bystander Revolution, in 2014.

They got engaged after three months of dating and eventually got married in 1993.

"My office was next door to his, and all day long I listened to that fabulous laugh", she recalled in a 2013 interview with Vogue. Shortly after, they packed up and moved across the country to Seattle, where Bezos launched Amazon.
