Netflix Trailers a Next Gen 'Carmen Sandiego' with Antihero Twist

As promised, Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez voices Carmen, a spunky, self-assured criminal mastermind cutting her teeth working for the bad guy conglomerate V.I.L.E. Instead of swiping artifacts and other valuables that she'd typically chase for evil purposes, she chose to take those goods in order to protect them from being stolen by other members of V.I.L.E.

The clip introduces Carmen as a highly skilled thief who only steals from other thieves. She's helped along by her techy sidekick, Player (Finn Wolfhard).

"Everybody asks "WHERE is Carmen Sandiego? but nobody asks "WHO is Carmen Sandiego?" reads the trailer's description and, unlike previous iterations, this time the titular character will be the hero of the series, not the villain". The animation style is cool, full of sharp lines and canted angles that remind me of shows like Samurai Jack.

Season one of Carmen Sandiego streams on Netflix January 18. It'll be fun to see which make the transition to live-action along with Rodriguez.

The trailer explains her long red coat (filled with tools) and her constant travels (always off to stop the next attempt by an worldwide organization), introducing a few characters past and present along the way.

The character originated in the 1985 PC game Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
