Karl-Anthony Towns and the Timberwolves will be playing for interim coach Ryan Saunders presumably for the rest of the season.
After a strenuous offseason and hard start to the regular season, the Minnesota Timberwolves have relived Tom Thibodeau of his coaching duties after three seasons.
"I'm just taking everything day by day", Saunders said.
In an official statement, owner, Glen Taylor said, "We would like to thank Tom for his efforts and wish him the best". And everyone involved - players, coaches and staff - know that. Priot to being hired as an assistant by the Wizards in 2009, Saunders was a graduate assistant under Tubby Smith at the University of Minnesota in 2008, helping the program to an NCAA Tournament appearance. I think he's going to do a great job, especially because you can talk to him. Everyone believes in him, everyone respects him and trusts him. When Butler returned to the Timberwolves after holding out in the preseason he orchestrated one of the most infamous practices the league has witnessed, and seemingly did so with Thibodeau's blessing. Towns as well as teammate Andrew Wiggins were told about the firing by phone, and were reportedly not given a solid answer as to why.
"I've got a lot of ideas, but you've got to see what's best for the team", Saunders said. Just ready to go, ready for a new start.
"Assistant coach Ryan Saunders will take over as interim coach for the rest of the season, while Scott Layden will remain Minnesota's general manager".
Current ESPN analyst and former five-time All-Star point guard Chauncey Billups has also been discussed internally as a candidate for both positions, sources told Wojnarowski.
Taylor said he was "just looking at the results".
"I'm hurt because Thibs is not here".
