"Update on the "Empire" Smollett case: The victim and his manager reported that they were talking on their cell phones to each other but CPD has been unable to independently verify this because they refused to turn over their cell phones", CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a Thursday statement obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
"That I can tell you is disgusting", Trump replied. TMZ reports a neighbor of Smollett's said she saw a "redneck" hanging around outside of the building with a rope before the alleged assault.
"But I want to be clear about the city of #Chicago and our values", Emanuel continued. In a follow-up interview with police, Smollett also told investigators that he heard attackers shout "MAGA country".
Guglielmi also said police have recovered video that shows the 36-year-old actor walking into his apartment, but that he hasn't seen it and doesn't know if Smollett appeared to be in any distress when he arrived home.
Police are still hoping to speak to the two men seen in the video about the alleged attack.
On Tuesday, Smollett was violently attacked by MAGA supporters that left him hospitalized. The men wore ski masks and according to Smollett said, "Aren't you that f-t "Empire" N-word?" and yelled "This is MAGA country" and began beating him while continuing their vile tirade. Police confirmed Smollett walking across the street from the two people. Police expanded their search area and found "people of interest" Wednesday, according to a tweet by Guglielmi. The pictures were stills taken from surveillance video captured on Tuesday between 1:30 am and 1:45 am, when the alleged attack took place.
"We haven't seen anybody, at this point, matching the description he gave".
Guglielmi said on Wednesday that detectives, who are investigating the allegations as a possible hate crime, have looked at hundreds of hours of surveillance video from that section of the Streeterville neighbourhood.
