Batman set for 2021 makeover

Warner Bros has announced the release date for The Batman which will be written and directed by Matt Reeves. Christian Bale had done a fine job with the role (questionable Batman voice aside), but more importantly, he had left a stamp on it for the first time since Michael Keaton had played the part (Val Kilmer and George Clooney's turns as Batman were largely forgettable at best). For example, Ben Affleck starred in 2003's Daredevil over ten years before his debut as the Caped Crusader in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Reeves boarded Batman in February 2017, taking over for Affleck who was originally set to direct off a script he wrote with DC's Geoff Johns. "It has become clear that I can not do both jobs to the level they require".

Who would you cast as the new Batman? "Aquaman is going to be very different from the Todd Phillips Joker movie, and that's going to be different from Shazam! and Harley Quinn".

"I'm grateful for the Bat", he would later admit.

Not much is known about The Batman as far as casting or plot goes.

Affleck, meanwhile, has a pretty busy schedule that also prevented him from returning as Batman.

"We haven't been dated", Reeves clarified of The Batman's release window.

"The suit takes an hour to get into, and you can't do it by yourself, and then you can't hear because there are really no earholes in it", he reflected in 2012. At the time, Affleck meant to remain as the star of the film. "It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional".

The latest update comes courtesy of an extensive sit-down Reeves had with the Hollywood Reporter, discussing his career, current projects, and of course, the long shadow of Batman.

"Lego Batman doesn't know that he is an animated character", says Arnett of the role he's now voiced in three cartoon capers. Affleck has no problem giving the character warmth when it calls for it, and again, the biggest problems with the movie aren't because of his performance, but because of filmmaking beyond his control.
