The new trailer for the Child's Play reboot has landed, and it features a major technical upgrade of everyone's favorite homicidal doll. They're keeping the original name from the first series, Child's Play, but updating everything and re-introducing the Chucky doll as a high-tech toy called "Buddi" created by Kaslan Corp.
Chucky isn't throwing out one-liners in the trailer above ("What would Martha Stewart say?"), but it still has a playful tone set to "Best Friend" by Harry Nilsson (who, between this and Russian Doll, is having quite the year).
As if that wasn't enough, the franchise had six more movies after that and another one is on the way. That show, which is coming to Syfy in the U.S., will continue the story that began in the 1988 film and went through six sequels.
Now, don't confuse this project with the upcoming Child's Play-inspired TV show by franchise creator Don Mancini. Mancini and franchise producer David Kirschner were asked to be a part of the film, given executive producer credits, but they declined. Mancini, who wrote all seven films and directed the last three, said on the Post Mortem podcast, "Obviously my feelings were hurt, you know, I had just done two movies...forgive me if I sound defensive, [they] were both at 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes".
We'll find out if the new lineup can win over skeptics when the film hits theaters on June 21st, 2019.
