The Walking Dead has lost another star.
Joining Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan, now it is learned Danai Gurira is leaving The Walking Dead. While we don't know her official episode count, THR claims she'll only appear in a "handful" of season 10's episodes. It is likely that she will segue into the three TWD film spin-0ffs opposite Andrew Lincoln, who plays her character's love interest, Rick Grimes. Gurira will have the flexibility now to work on her feature film career (and appear in more MCU movies), while The Walking Dead will be able to hang on to one of its most popular characters. Lincoln exited the series in the first half of season 9.
"She has been very vocal about saying that she loves the show". It was probably only a matter of time before she left to focus on her own projects, which include writing and producing an adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's hit novel Americanah into a limited series that will reunite her with Eclipsed star Lupita Nyong'o.
Considering Michonne became largely the show's central core following Rick's exit, and as a major player in Robert Kirkman's comics, it'll certainly be a challenge for the show if it continues beyond season 10. Right now, she's got a lot of opportunities and she needs to weigh what she feels is best for her. She is an incredibly valuable character and I'm really hoping she stays. She also played a noticeable part in Avengers: Infinity War and is set to star in this year's follow-up, Endgame.
Gurira has been finding success on the big screen, and had a key role in the hugely successful Marvel superhero saga "Black Panther".
