Disney CEO, Bob Iger, explained in an investors call that the company is happy to forgo its licensing revenue (of around £108 million) in order to make Disney+ a success. The show will be written by Ilana Peña of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend fame, starring Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez. Way back in 2017, he answered a similar question by saying "We think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool". This will be followed by the company utilising Fox assets once the deal has been finalised, which is set to bolster Marvel properties and introduce a wealth of adult-focused animation to the roster. "Because we need to launch the service with some volume - and it takes time to ramp up - we're buying certain products from the outside opportunistically, and we'll continue to do that".
Disney broke out its revenues and operating loss for direct-to-consumer and worldwide activities as a separate line for the first time in its Q1 results, posting revenues of US$918 million (€806 million), down 1%, and an operating loss of US$136 million, up from loss of US$42 million, for the unit.
"Captain Marvel" will be the first Disney Plus exclusive film, signaling a change in which Disney movies will no longer appear initially on Netflix. Perhaps that's the attitude the company has maintained since ending the Disney Infinity series. However, he said, there could be room for discounts for people who wanted to sign up for multiple services and Disney's ultimate goal was to have all its streaming services use the same technology platform. Beginning with Captain Marvel, new Disney movies will be skipping Netflix and heading for the Mouse House's soon-to-launch streaming competitor, which is expected to open later this year.
