Mauro Icardi: Argentine striker stripped of Inter Milan captaincy

Inter Milan have stripped Mauro Icardi of the club captaincy, with goalkeeper Samir Handanovic taking over the role, according to Sky in Italy.

Inter confirmed the news on Twitter, simply stating: "The Club can confirm that Samir Handanovic is the new Inter captain".

"The decision to remove the captain's armband from Icardi was hard and painful, because we all know what he is worth to the team", Spalletti told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

This will only fuel speculations about ICARDI's exit from the club especially since he has yet to renew his contract.

The Argentine has been left out of the team's Europa League round of 32, first-leg game at Rapid Vienna on Thursday.

"But it was divided between all parts of the club and was made exclusively for the good of Inter".

"Mauro was called up for Vienna, but he didn't want to come".

"The things going on around Icardi have disturbed us, both him and the team which he used to captain". He has not scored in Serie A for seven games.

Spalletti also reacted angrily to Nara's latest remarks and he spoke with the club's new general manager Beppe Marotta - who has already taken a heavy-handed approach by suspending Radja Nainggolan for turning up late for training last month - on Tuesday to discuss the issue, which was starting to cause disturbances within the team.

"I have not created any problems for Icardi", Spalletti told DAZN.

Icardi has become crucial to the Nerazzurri since joining from Sampdoria in 2013, scoring 122 goals in 210 outings while lifting the Capocanniere award for Serie A's most prolific scorer on two occasions. Chelsea will never get a better chance to sign him.
