It's still the West Coast Swing, so once again much of the talk going into the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am will be about Phil Mickelson, who has won the tournament four times among his 19 victories in California and Arizona.

The unusually accurate driving helped the five-times major champion to a six-under-par 65 at Monterey Peninsula, one of three courses used at the event.

It would be the first time Lefty has hit every fairway in a PGA Tour round in 21 years (1998 at Torrey Pines). "I may have done it before but I don't ever recall doing it".

"I think history was made as far as my career. This was a day we had great weather, courses were very "scoreable", so you needed to take advantage of that".

Pebble Beach will also host the U.S. Open in June when the course is likely to be much drier than the damp, lush conditions that will greet players this week after recent heavy rains.

In the opening round of the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Jordan Spieth turned in a 5-under 66 at the Monterey Peninsula, placing him two-strokes off the lead heading into Friday. Mickelson is not, though he has won more majors of now active players than anyone other than Tiger Woods.

Spieth was even at the turn but ran in five birdies coming home. Romo was on the range at Pebble Beach with a Nike Method 001 putter from Tiger Woods and a 60-degree Titleist Vokey SM7 lob wedge from Jordan Spieth. And I could have really poor years the rest of my career and still have a pretty fantastic career.
