Maybe we're at the beginning of a new era.

The U.S. climate change walkouts are part of a larger worldwide climate change movement called #FridaysforFuture where tens of thousands of student climate change activists around the world in more than 90 countries are expected to cut class on March 15 to demand that lawmakers in their respective countries take action on climate change and stop global warming. But she also said it was important to start taking action on climate change as soon as possible.

"Greta Thunberg has launched a mass movement in which I see, perhaps, the main contribution to peace".

Thunberg responded on social media by saying she is "honored and very grateful for this nomination". We'll be walking from the University of Malta to the Parliament building in Valletta, to raise awareness on our future and our planet! "With our futures at stake, we call for radical legislative action to combat climate change and its countless detrimental effects on the American people".

She had already challenged leaders in person at the United Nations climate summit in late 2018 and at Davos in January.

Thousands of young Australians are set to walk out of their classrooms today to demand action on climate change. There's a precedent for the Nobel Peace Prize going to a courageous teen who speaks truth to power: The 2014 prize was given to Malala Yousafzai, 17 years old at the time, who survived a Taliban assassination attempt and advocates for girls' education.

There are 301 candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019, out of which 223 are individuals and 78 are organisations, says the Nobel committee on its website.

If Greta wins the prize, she will be the youngest person to ever become a Nobel laureate.

The Nobel prizes are awarded each year on December 10, coinciding with the anniversary of the death of its founder Alfred Nobel, in a double ceremony: at the Oslo City Hall in Norway, for the Peace Prize, and in the Konserthus in Stockholm, Sweden, for the other five awards.
