Arsenal target Monchi returns to Sevilla as sporting director after Roma exit

"Monchi has returned to what will always be his home", Sevilla said in a statement on Sunday.

Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo, better known as "Monchi", has agreed to return to Sevilla as the club's sporting director, despite reportedly being close to taking a similar role at Arsenal.

Arsenal are looking to make an appointment after recruitment head Sven Mislintat left in February and were linked with Spaniard Monchi, who had left his role as director of football at Roma at the start of March.

"Sevilla FC and Monchi have reached an agreement for him to return to what had been his position until two years ago, as general sports director of the club".

'It has been the club that has shown the most interest in me but, in the end, I evaluated all of the offers I had on the table and I chose the one that convinced me most.

"I had other options, and very important ones that were flashier, but I've chosen Sevilla because its sporting project convinced me".

The 50-year-old had worked closely with former Sevilla coach Unai Emery, who is now in charge at Arsenal, and the pair helped the club win three consecutive Europa League titles.

"Many people outside of Seville have told me that I've made the wrong choice, that sequels are never good".

Monchi went on to disclose that the contract is of indefinite duration, as he hopes his second spell to be similarly long.

Monchi returns to the club at a delicate time, with Pablo Machin sacked on Friday after the team's elimination from the Europa League. I get pleasure and satisfaction from that.
