Kyle Busch sweeps Phoenix with Cup Series win

Kyle Busch easily could have laid claim to being the top Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver not driving a Team Penske Ford through the first three races of the 2019 season. Blaney said his auto drove better over the final run than he expected after his team only changed two tires on the final pit stop.

Kyle Busch took home the top prize in Sundays Ticket Guardian 500 at ISM Raceway for his 199th career NASCAR win, and his 52nd career Cup win.

Busch went from the lead to fifth in the running order because of varying pit strategies during a caution for a Chase Elliott spin on lap 219.

Blaney was forced to slow his pace over the final 15 laps in an effort to save gas, allowing Martin Truex get by him to give Joe Gibbs Racing a one-two finish.

Truex finished second while Blaney who led 94 laps settled for third.

Busch slowed his pace in the final laps to save fuel and said afterwards he knew he was close on fuel because of the length of the run, but he had to get by Blaney before he could start saving fuel. We're a little bit off on Fridays, and that's getting us behind, but I feel like each weekend as the weekend goes, we're getting a little strong and a little stronger. The drivers head to California this weekend.

"To work with my guys and take them to Victory Lane is what it's all about". But it's worth noting that Petty earned all of his wins on the Cup Series, which may be why Busch himself even seems to be downplaying the significance of his achievements. "But we'll take what we got today". I'm not quite as good as Jeff Gordon any more with being able to win 10 races a year or 13 races a year. I think they knew what kind of situation I was in.

Aric Almirola was fourth and Denny Hamlin was fifth, his vehicle also performing better on long green-flag runs.

Kevin Harvick had won four of the past five spring races at ISM Raceway, and his nine total Cup Series wins at the mile-long speedway are a record. Joey Logano won last week and Brad Keselowski two weeks ago.

Lead Changes: 17 among 6 drivers.

After giving up the lead, Blaney fell to third while he saved fuel. Hamlin 66;R. Blaney 67-79;K. Busch 80-152;D.
