It is not clear how exactly she lost her footing but she fell through an opening in a landing.

The waiter, whose roommate allegedly arrived on the scene shortly after the fall, said she was gravely injured.

"They're heartbroken. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to witness", the unnamed pal told ABC-TV. They were like, 'We're seniors.

Fordham Public Safety is still investigating how Monfries and her friends were able to get inside. My roommate was with them. Bob Howe, assistant vice president for communications, explained that "access to that tower is always locked".

The forbidden visit to the tower should be reported to one of three rituals, through which the students of the Fordham University in the course of their studies: in addition to the ascent, on the Statue of the mascot of the University of popular industry-standard photograph ("you have to ride the RAM", it describes a student newspaper.) and a fabled tunnels under the Campus to cross.

Students said climbing the tower, touching the bell and taking photos of the sweeping views, were part of a senior-year "rite of passage", according to the paper. Monfries was an intern at InStyle magazine.

People began posting on her Facebook page on Sunday, mourning the loss and offering their condolences to her family, who flew in from Portland, Ore. The video which included the caption "Bell tower", was posted to her Snapchat account on Sunday morning.

The school confirmed it on Sunday, saying in a statement: 'The University community mourns the loss of Sydney Monfries, a senior at Fordham College at Rose Hill, who died Sunday evening after sustaining a fall inside the Keating Clock tower'.

On social media, friends paid tribute to Monfries as a "sweet soul".
