Embiid said after the game that Johnson's daughter is sick and they were just getting an update on her. During the first game of the 2019 NBA Playoffs, the Sixers failed to defend their homecourt, falling to the pesky Brooklyn Nets, 111-102. "I also apologize to my teammates, the 76ers organization and the fans for the distraction this has caused", said Johnson in a release.
The use of a cellphone on the bench is a violation of the NBA Operations Manual, and violations can result in a substantial fine and/or suspension. He did not disclose the amount. The bigger news was on the bench were Embiid and Amir Johnson were caught texting, or at least checking texts, from a phone during the loss.
Coach Brett Brown did mention that we will see a "different Ben Simmons in Game 2" so that is something to look forward to as the series moves on to the next one.
"It's not something that we are about", Brown said.
Sixers superstar Joel Embiid, who was questionable with a troubling knee injury, was able to play in Game 1 and scored 24 points in 22 minutes, but aside from Jimmy Butler, almost every Sixers player struggled in Game 1.
