Ovechkin knocks Svechnikov to ice in ruthless fight

Linesman Scott Cherrey pulls Alex Ovechkin off of Andrei Svechnikov during the first period.

During tonight's game three matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin made a decision to drop the gloves with Andrei Svechnikov. The two dropped gloves to brawl before Ovechkin pummeled rookie Svechnikov with three right jabs.

The 19-year-old winger immediately fell to the ice and didn't get up for several moments.

Ovechkin's Washington Capitals now lead their first round playoff series with the Carolina Hurricanes 2-0.

The Carolina Hurricanes' Andrei Svechnikov just learned that the hard way.

It was Ovechkin's fourth career fight and first since 2010, according to HockeyFights.com. Both players were assessed 5-minute major penalties for the fight.

Carolina said Svechnikov would miss the rest of the game with an upper-body injury. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 National Hockey League draft has played in every game for the Hurricanes this season, scoring 20 goals and 17 assists. His absence is a blow for Carolina, which trails the best-of-seven series 2-0.

It's not the first time the teenager has meet the Russian superstar.
