But there is no bell in the tower, the school said.
Sydney Paige Monfries, 22, from Portland, Oregon, fell from a bell tower as she attempted to take photos of the NY skyline.
Sydney Paige Monfries, 22, from Portland, Oregon, suffered fatal injuries following the horror plunge at Fordham University campus in NY, weeks before graduation. Another student, Anne, told the New York Post: "I think they were posting on Instagram when it happened".
University bosses are now investigating to find out how the group gained access to the tower.
The circumstances of her fall were not immediately available, police said.
The tower is the central part of Keating Hall on the university's Rose Hill campus in the Bronx. "And they were like trying to get good views of the city", student Antonia Greene said.
The New York Times reports Sydney Monfries, a 22-year-old student at Fordham University, plummeted down the inside of a clock and bell tower early Sunday. She fell 40 feet through the inside of the tower and struck her head on the ground. The student, a senior, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, and the student's family was notified.
School president Joseph McShane confirmed the tragic news in a letter to students later that evening. They're unlocked at night when they're cleaning.
Her death was announced to students in an email sent by the school, which described the "unimaginable loss" suffered by Ms Monfries' family, friends and school community.
According to the university's website, Fordham University is a Jesuit, Catholic institution focused on instilling students with "wisdom, experience, morality, critical thinking and creative problem-solving".
