For as long as Smith can remember, his mother, Barbara, was secretive, especially when it came to the cardboard box in the freezer.
"There was a pink baby blanket, and when I reached down and touched it, I could feel a foot".
Police responded to the building early Sunday morning.
Adam Smith said he was cleaning out the south St. Louis apartment where his mother lived for 20 years last week, following her death from lung cancer. He shared a photo showing the wrapped box that was in the freezer.

'The head homicide guy was stumped, ' Smith told KMOV. "He literally looked at me and said, 'This is a good one'". He was also told by a relative that she gave birth to twins, one of whom she gave up for adoption and one of whom died.
He said his mother had kept the box, wrapped up tight, in their freezer for decades and always told him to stay away from it. "It turns out it was a baby ..." I'm assuming it is my sister, been in a box in a freezer for this long'. Smith submitted a DNA sample to investigators and an autopsy will be conducted, according to the Post-Dispatch.
He also has a 45 year-old sister and they're frustrated they may never find out what happened.
'Even as she was on her deathbed, she never told me what was in that box.
"I have to wait for the autopsy to see if that baby ever took a breath and I can not help it to think she might have done something to it", Smith said.
Meanwhile, Smith told KMOV he is struggling to deal with the shocking discovery.
'He told me my mom was pregnant on their first date and that the next time he saw her, she wasn't, ' Smith told the Post-Dispatch.
Now he thinks the body is Jennifer. "I just have so many thoughts". "I just have so many thoughts and it's just insane".
Police said in a news release Monday only that the infant was found inside a residence and that the death is being investigated as "suspicious" pending an autopsy.
When he asked her about the box in the past, he was told it was none of his business. "I just want to find closure, I want to find more answers".
