The production will star "Moana's" Auli'i Cravalho as Ariel, the titular young heroine who makes the Faustian deal to trade in her voice for legs that will allow her to walk on land and find her true love - and Queen Latifah as the evil sea witch Ursula who brokers such an arrangement. The updated version of the film will star Halle Bailey (grown-ish) as Ariel, Jacob Tremblay (The Twilight Zone) as the fish Flounder and Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) as the seagull Scuttle.
The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live!
Reggae musician, singer, DJ, actor, and Grammy-winning artist Shaggy will try to keep Ariel in line as he plays Sebastian.
According to ABC, the two-hour live production will showcase a hybrid format and will feature intricate sets and costumes, with music from the original animated film and the Broadway musical, originally composed by Alan Menken. Additional cast will be announced at a later date. This live TV musical will be directed by Hamish Hamilton and produced by Katy Mullan, David Jammy, Raj Kapoor, and Ian Stewart. And now it seems that that ABC has followed parent company Disney's lead and also cast a woman of color for its live musical iteration of The Little Mermaid (titled Little Mermaid Live!).
But the broadcast special is not to be confused with Disney's upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, which is expected to begin production in 2020.
