The on-the-record trio offers varying levels of critique, with "Circle of Life" and hyena-animator David Stephan summing up the haters: "If you polled the crew of the original 'Lion King, ' majority would say, 'Why?" HuffPo reached out to 13 original "Lion King" animators to get their thoughts on Jon Favreau's photorealistic remake, many of whom declined to comment. Majority offered comments anonymously as they were afraid of rubbing Disney the wrong way and jeopardizing their careers. While the original storytelling might not be there, it's hard to rail against some of the outstanding production design, costume design, and visual effects being brought to life.
Animator David Stephan was one of the few of the 13 crew contacted to go on the record about his thoughts, saying "If you polled the crew of the original 'Lion King, ' majority would say, 'Why? Did you actually have to do this?' It type of hurts". "Perhaps if we received any type of royalties it might be totally different".
Some of the animators of the original film apparently aren't happy with Disney's recycling of their vision. "Disney's now taken the quilt off, and it's now in your face: 'Yeah, we simply wish to generate profits.' That's disappointing as an artist, from a studio that was based on originality and artwork".
"It would jar me out of the film, literally", Stephen said. "Particularly with little Simba strolling round". It was too real. "I believed, 'Oh, that is actually low-priced.' I feel it was simply too quickly for this one". So as far as I'm concerned, it's kind of none of my business whether they want to remake it or not. Let us know in the comments. "Let's just keep it real as possible.' And I think it just diminished the film". The Lion King benefitted massively because of its Hindi dubbed version included big names like Shah Rukh Khan, Aryan Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Ashish Vidyarthi and Asrani.
Indeed, the animals in the movie aren't able to emote in the same way, leaving the movie feeling somewhat hollow.
Stephan mentioned that the photorealistic VFX used on the 2019 "Lion King" negated what made the animated 1994 movie so particular and imaginative.
