Moving up from 44th past year, McGill remains one of three Canadian universities among the top 50 in THE world table with strong showing in teaching, research, and global outlook. IISC was followed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar and IIT Indore that also fell in 351-400 bracket. It now is the joint Indian toppers with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

THE UNIVERSITY of Edinburgh has fallen one place in an annual ranking of the world's top higher education establishments - despite retaining its place as Scotland's best.


Swinburne places at 389 overall, which is up 52 places from the previous year's rankings, positioning Swinburne in the top three per cent of universities worldwide. 1,300- university list from 92 countries, Indian is the fifth most - represented nation in the rankings with 56 institutions. However, for the first time since 2012, not a single Indian university made it to the top 300 list.

According to Hindustan Times, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), which was the only Indian entry in the top 300 a year ago, has dropped positions from the 301-350 group due to a "significant fall" in its research citation impact. As per the new ranking, the gap between the top educational and research institutes of the country and their global contemporaries has widened.

Bothwell believes that The Indian government has strong ambitions to boost the global standing of its top universities and attract foreign students, academics and research collaboration. There were a few who have risen, including IIT-Delhi and IIT- Kharagpur and Jamia Millia Islamia.

There are estimated to be more than 26,000 universities in the world. United States institutions saw a slight drop in their average ranking overall.

Occupying the rest of the Top 10 spots were Stanford University with 94.3 points; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 93.6; Princeton University, 93.2; Harvard University, 93.0; University of Chicago, 90.2; and the Imperial College London, 89.8. Mainland China now hosts the top two universities in Asia with Tsinghua, the leader from continent at 23rd place and Peking at 24th overtaking the National University of Singapore.
