The problem is, the Tar Heels ended the night at UNC Wilmington with one fewer player than it started.
The Seahawks won their season opener against the D-III Johnson & Wales Wildcats in a 103-83 contest that saw five players score more than 10 points, including a 19-point, 3-steal outing from Jaylen Sims.
This time, Anthony made just 7 of 24 shots but finished with a second straight double-double to go with three assists and four made 3-pointers for the Tar Heels (2-0).
With his father - former UNLV and National Basketball Association guard Greg Anthony - in the stands, the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason freshman of the year broke Rashad McCants' 17-year-old scoring record by a freshman in his first game and finished 12 of 24 from the field with six 3-pointers. While many couldn't see the game due to it only being broadcasted on FloHoops, Anthony and Justin Pierce paced the Tar Heels to a victory.
"Obviously some guys can be disappointed in how they played because they didn't make some shots and maybe turned it over", UNC Wilmington coach C.B. McGrath said.
With the momentum on their side, the Tar Heels started off the fourth set strong. He had 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals. The Broncos briefly closed within 22-17 before OR hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions to push the lead to 31-17. The Tar Heels shot poorly from the floor and had trouble getting anything going.
Abu Kigab, who transferred from OR to Boise State midway through last season, was not eligible to play against the Ducks as he waits to becoming eligible at the end of fall semester. When Duke closed the gap and trailed 22-20, the Tar Heels called a timeout to regroup. They led 13-6 early and stayed in front for the rest of the night. Junior Garrison Brooks also had one of the best games of his career. Side note, I wish we would see this more often.
Anthony got scoring help from his teammates. As a sophomore in 2018, he scored 23 points against the Seahawks while playing for his former school, William & Mary.
UNC: The Tar Heels host Gardner-Webb next Friday. He went back to the locker room and did not return. And he had his first career double-double.
"We've got to get more out of Andrew (Platek), we've got to get more out of Christian (Keeling), we've got to get more out of Leaky (Black)", Williams said.
The Tar Heels were again without Brandon Robinson, who is recovering from an ankle injury, but is no longer in a walking boot.
"I was just doing what coach says for me to do every day and working hard as I possibly can", Brooks, who also had 12 rebounds, said. He was one rebound shy of a double-double against Notre Dame.
