Andrew Yang on Trump: ‘We Have to Stop Being Obsessed with Impeachment’

"If you turn on cable network news today, you would think he's president because of some combination of Russian Federation, racism, Facebook, Hillary Clinton, and emails all mixed together".

Andrew Yang distanced himself from fellow presidential candidates in opening remarks in the Democratic debate on Thursday night, criticizing Congress and media networks for "missing the reason why Donald Trump became our president in the first place".

A trial in the Republican-controlled Senate would nearly certainly result in Trump being acquitted of the charges.

Mr Van Drew broke with his party and voted against impeaching Mr Trump - a move that bolstered the Republican Party's attempts to depict Democrats as divided on the matter. He is only the third US president to be impeached.

"McConnell claimed the impeachment was motivated by partisan rage", said Schumer.

Such messaging has been effective in driving outrage among the president's core supporters, which Trump's campaign hopes will help propel him to reelection next year.

But its fate was left in limbo late Thursday when the Senate's powerful majority leader, Mitch McConnell signalled the standoff with Democrats over trial particulars would continue into the new year.

Welcome to this epic morning the night after impeachment, United States politics watchers.

Trump seized on the uncertainty to attack House Democrats for seeking to demand key witnesses or dictate how McConnell should run the process. At least 20 Republican senators would have to vote to convict Trump and so far none have indicated they are open to doing so.

Pelosi said that McConnell "says it's OK for the foreman of the jury to be in cahoots with the lawyers of the accused".

But Yang took a different route, after saying last month "when we're talking about impeaching Donald Trump, we're talking about Donald Trump and we are losing".

"Our founders, when they wrote the Constitution, they suspected that there could be a rogue president".

She said she would wait to name the Democratic House "managers", who will prosecute the case, until she knew more about the Senate trial procedures.

"The next thing will be when we see the process that is set forth in the Senate", Pelosi said. "He gave us no choice", Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, said when kicking off the debate hours before the vote.

No two impeachments are quite the same, but Trump was charged 84 days after Pelosi announced the inquiry.

His political future now rests with McConnell, a self-proclaimed "Grim Reaper" who is widely known as a shrewd negotiator who plays hardball politics at a level unusual even by Washington standards. The laconic McConnell eschews Twitter, sometimes sits silently listening in meetings, according to attendees, and can repel reporters' questions by refusing to utter a syllable.
