The Gila County Sheriff's office is coordinating the effort to locate the children.
According to a statement from Gila County Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd, authorities received a call on Friday at 4:11 p.m. of a vehicle stuck in Tonto Creek near the Tonto Basin.
A man and four children were able to get to safety on an island in the creek and were rescued by first responders, the police department said.
"Searchers found the truck about 1,000 yards downstream from the crossing Friday night", Dodd said.
Tonto Creek is about 55 miles (88 kilometers) northeast of Phoenix.
