Cynthia spoke to Variety at the red carpet of the premiere of the HBO show, "The Outsider", in which she stars.

She continued, explaining her disappointment with the lack of diversity in the nominations.

In addition to her acting nomination, Erivo also has a Best Original Song nomination for Stand Up, which can be seen in Harriet.

Cynthia Erivo attends the 25th annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.

The actress also stated that the snub formed a major part of her decision to reject the invitation to perform at the awards ceremony.

In a statement to Access Hollywood, Cynthia reacted to the exciting nominations, "To receive two Oscar nominations for a film paying tribute to Harriet Tubman, a person whose heart and spirit are the embodiment of courage, makes this morning's news beyond anything I could have ever imagined". "I believe there has been incredible work this year and lovely pieces that have come out not just by people of color but women directors as well". But in the meantime, we can genuinely say, congratulations to Cynthia Erivo.

BAFTA had announced earlier that they would launch a careful and detailed review of the nomination process, but Erivo is unsure as to its outcome and added that the time had come for change.

"It is bittersweet really and truly because while I worked very hard for what was happening I also would have loved to be able to celebrate with other people of color who worked really hard this year also", she said.

Cynthia Erivo attends the premiere of HBO's "The Outsider" at DGA Theater in Los Angeles, California.

"I felt like [the invitation] didn't represent people of color in the right light. It just isn't." She continued, "Far too much work was done this year by incredible women and men of color that should be celebrated". "It just was like, C'mon".

Only white actors were listed in the shortlists for the British film awards ceremony.

Erivo is joined in the Best Actress category by fellow Tony victor Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) as well as Saoirse Ronan for Little Women, Charlize Theron for Bombshell, and Renée Zellweger for the Judy Garland biopic Judy.
