The Dow industrials, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all hit new highs, and Asian shares nudged higher on Wednesday.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), called on all countries as "aggressively" as possible to prevent the spread of the virus and announced that the first vaccine to be developed against the Corona virus could be completed in 18 months.

"It has spread to other places where it's the beginning of the outbreak", Dale Fisher, head of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network coordinated by the World Health Organization, said in an interview in Singapore.

"In Singapore, we are at the beginning of the outbreak".

Malaysia has reported 18 cases of the virus, while neighbouring Singapore's tally is 47, over half of which are local transmissions.

Two other patients have died in the Philippines and Hong Kong.

About 60,000 people have now been confirmed to have the virus, the vast majority in China. That was the lowest daily rise in new cases since January 30.

This brings the total number of deaths in mainland China to at least 1,355.

But doubts have been aired on social media about how reliable the figures are, after the government last week amended guidelines on the classification of cases.

The biggest cluster of cases outside China is on a cruise ship quarantined off the Japanese port of Yokohama, where a further 44 cases were reported on Thursday. One third of Tianjin's 104 confirmed cases are in Baodi district, where the store is located, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

The number of new cases has trended down in the past week, raising hopes that the epidemic may be peaking.

"We try to stay hopeful", American passenger Angela Jones told Reuters in a video recording.

China drew worldwide condemnation for covering up cases during the 2002-03 SARS outbreak, whereas the World Health Organization has praised measures taken by Beijing to combat COVID-19.

"We want to reassure our patients, their loved ones and the community at large that there is no exposure risk at any UC San Diego Health hospitals or clinics", the health system said in a statement.

The WHO officially named the new disease Covid-19 on Tuesday, as countries continued to impose travel restrictions meant to curb the spread of the virus.

The outbreak is suspected to have originated in a market illegally trading wildlife in the Hubei provincial capital of Wuhan in December.

Hundreds of people, including U.S. State Department employees and their families, have arrived at military bases in California, Texas and Nebraska aboard chartered flights from Wuhan, a city of 11 million that is the epicenter for the virus.

With companies laying off workers and supply chains from the vehicle industry to smartphones disrupted, China's economy is taking a big hit.
