But Dr Pachauri was forced to step down from the panel in 2015 over sexual harassment accusations made by a staff member at an Indian environment institute he led.
Pachauri reportedly underwent a cardiac surgery recently, and was admitted at the Escorts Heart Institute.
Pachauri's death was announced late Thursday by The Energy and Resources Institute, or TERI, a research group he headed until 2016 in New Delhi.
Pachauri passed away at his residence in the national capital with wife, daughter and son by his side.
The 79-year-old environmentalist had earlier undergone an open heart surgery at the same hospital after suffering a stroke in Mexico last July.
"It is with vast sadness that we announce the passing away of R K Pachauri, the founder Director of TERI".
Pachauri was the chairperson of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007, when it shared the Nobel Peace Prize with former US Vice President Al Gore. After the FIR was registered in February 2015, Pachauri was given anticipatory bail the following month.
Stating Pachauri's "untiring perseverance", Mathur said the former TERI chief played the role in making us a leading organisation in the sustainability space. In the statement issued by TERI on Thursday, its Chairman Nitin Desai hailed Pachauri's contribution to global sustainable development as "unparalleled".
The Nobel Prize recognised IPCC for its "efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change". Pachauri was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2001 and Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
The Caravan had published an investigative report on allegations that Pachauri had systematically used his position to sexually harass several women employees of TERI. An alumnus of the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Jamalpur, Bihar, Pachauri served in various positions in the Indian Railways, including at the Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi. A Delhi court framed molestation charges against him in October 2018. Pachauri, however, denied the allegations saying his emails and mobile phone were hacked.
