Grocery delivery service Instacart on Monday said it plans to sign on 300,000 new gig workers to shop and deliver groceries, more than doubling its workforce of independent contractors. Demand for essential goods and food has skyrocketed and stores are hiring like insane to keep up. In addition to Inland Empire stores, the company confirmed all if its IE fulfillment and distribution centers are hiring.
"We know millions of Americans who are usually employed at this time are temporarily out of work, and at the same time we're now seeing strong demand in our stores", said Walmart CEO Carl McMillon.
Papa John's is one of three major pizza chains looking to take advantage of all the restaurant closings across the country. The largest private employer in the US wants to hire new associates through the end of May to work in stores, clubs, distribution centers, and fulfillment centers.
"We are opening 100,000 new full and part-time positions across the U.S.in our fulfillment centers and delivery network to meet the surge in demand from people relying on Amazon's service during this stressful time, particularly those most vulnerable to being out in public", a blog post from Dan Clark, the company's senior vice president of worldwide operations, said on March 16.
A new federal law will give more workers access to two weeks of paid sick leave.
United Parcel Service Inc. agreed last week to provide almost 300,000 unionized workers up to 10 days of paid leave if they are diagnosed with the virus or are required to be quarantined. Tesco PLC, the U.K.'s biggest supermarket which is looking to add 20,000 staffers, said it shortened its hiring process and is adding new recruits to the aisles within a day of applying online.
Another large retailer, Hy-Vee, is also hiring.
On Monday, CVS said it would hire 50,000 workers across its USA locations.
Plenty of businesses are still operating, many of which are considered "essential".
"New hires are important both for their customers, and to supplement the work and give relief to their existing, longtime employees", he said. Ms. Trupiano said there is some concern among staffers about coming into stores where they come into contact with hundreds of customers.
