A massive natural disaster of 7.5-magnitude struck the Kuril Islands in Russian Federation on Wednesday, reported news agency AFP quoted United States Geological Survey (USGS) as saying.

It added that hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) of the quake's epicenter.

"This quake has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami in the source region", it said. There were no early reports of casualties.

A 7.5 natural disaster in Russian Federation poses no tsunami risk to California and the rest of the West Coast, officials said.

"Sea level readings from the nearest two deep-ocean dart gauges now confirm there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii although some small sea level changes may occur", it said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a Tsunami Watch for the Island and State of Hawaii.

The four southernmost islands of the Kuril chain - Habomai, Shikotan, Etorofu and Kunashiri - have been disputed between Moscow and Tokyo since the end of World War II.
