The Macy's parade has been a traditional holiday season kickoff for more than 90 years and usually attracts throngs of tourists and locals who line the parade route to gawk at inflated characters like Snoopy or Felix the cat. Macy's said its signature balloons will be flown by a "specially rigged anchor vehicle framework" consisting of New York City Police Department and Department of Transportation vehicles.
"It will not be the same parade we're used to", he said.
Instead, the parade's elements will be staged in and around the Herald Square area of Manhattan - the location of the iconic Macy's store, which is the traditional endpoint of the event. "It will be a different kind of event".
Macy's and New York City announced Monday that the 2020 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will be modified for a mostly broadcast-only presentation.
She added, "While it will certainly look different in execution, this year's Macy's Parade celebration will once again serve its historical goal - to bring joy into the hearts of millions across the nation". Performers, the list of which has yet to be announced, will be socially distanced from each other and must wear masks or other appropriate face coverings.
No appearances by high school or college bands. The parade will feature 75% fewer participants than usual, with performances filmed over a two-day period and the massive balloons being attached to vehicles instead of held.
"We've worked closely with the Macy's team on a safe and creative plan this year, and we look forward to keeping this tradition going on Thanksgiving Day", Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. "While it will certainly look different in execution, this year's Macy's Parade celebration will once again serve its historical objective - to bring joy into the hearts of millions across the nation". Macy's pulled off its annual Fourth of July fireworks show this summer.
