A political appointee of President Trump has been interfering with COVID-19 reports by health experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention because their data doesn't match the "optimistic messages" sought by the White House.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 500,000 US children have been diagnosed with COVID-19 between August 20 and September 3.
The CDC study sampled 314 patients, including 154 who tested positive for COVID-19 and 160 who tested negative.
The study suggests that "direction, ventilation, and intensity of airflow might affect virus transmission, even if social distancing measures and mask use are implemented according to current guidance" and that shopping and other indoor activities may be safer than dining because they don't preclude mask use like eating and drinking do.
Activities that make mask usage and social distancing hard to maintain, such as dining out or in on-site eating, might be important risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection, the investigation noted. However, out of all the people who tested positive for COVID-19, that question was limited to individuals within the group who did not have any contact with someone who was infected with COVID-19 beforehand.
As for mask-wearing, 71% of adults with COVID-19 said they always wore a mask in public, while 74% of negative testers also admitted they wore a face covering, according to the survey.
"The bottom line is that many people don't put their mask back on when they aren't eating and drinking, and may be engaged in conversation", said Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency medicine physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
The study also showed that two to three asymptomatic children also transmitted the disease. "Such aerosolized droplets may also travel as far as 26 ft. during sneezes and 15 ft. during coughs".
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy allowed indoor dining to return September 4 at 25% capacity almost six months after dining rooms were shuttered to curtail the spread of the coronavirus. They also had to rate how well they followed the social distancing rules. They will have to close at midnight and bar seating is still not permitted. Caputo is a former Trump campaign offocial with no scientific background - yet he has pushed for the CDC's reporting to reflect Trump's claims that the pandemic is subsiding and the effects of the virus have been trumped up by his opposition.
"It's vital that we start moving forward with this sector of our hospitality industry who have endured one of the toughest paths for sustaining a business during this pandemic", he said. DeSantis told reporters at a restaurant roundtable discussion in Fort Myers that he will lift a 50% capacity limit on indoor dining "very soon".
