Barcelona coach Koeman: I decide where Griezmann plays!

'I decide what's best for the team': Barca boss Ronald Koeman dismisses dissent from French star Antoine Griezmann

Koeman's message for Griezmann: Give everything and I'm the boss

Ronald Koeman and Antoine Griezmann have had a mini war of words through the media since Barcelona's 1-1 draw at home to Sevilla just before the global break, yet the Dutchman has made clear that there is no issue between himself and the French forward.

Griezmann started Barca's first three league fixtures this season on the right of a three-man attack, but returned to a central role on worldwide duty with France.

The 29-year-old has registered just one shot on target for the club this season and is yet to create a single chance for a team-mate.

Speaking to the media after the game, the World Cup victor said that he enjoyed the freedom he receives in the French lineup because Deschamps "plays me in my best position".

"I spoke to him (Griezmann) yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, but not about this question". We talked about his position and performance.

"I told him I want the best for the team and I know he can play on the right side and other positions".

Koeman was also asked whether he would rest Leo Messi, with the trip to Getafe followed by Barca's Champions League debut and then the "Clasico" against Real Madrid and replied that he believed Messi could play in all of the games. He's doing the best he can do: working, being disciplined. There were four or five attacks in which he had to do better. Someone plays as a No.11 and one must play as a No.10, another No.9, others in holding midfield. but I don't put anyone in a place other than their position. No further discussion is needed on this topic. It's up to each player to find his own best performance. "It could be much more for you" he said, making it clear that "I have no problem with Antoine". "If there's another position that you like, well, we can not play with 10 players in the number 10 position".

Messi played 180 minutes - including 90 at an altitude of 3,650 metres in La Paz - as Argentina began their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign with wins over Ecuador and Bolivia. I ask how they are, if they are exhausted.

"I decide based on what's best for the team". I talk to them and then we decide.

"Leo has spent many years playing in a tight schedule, and if he doesn't play then he feels even more exhausted", Koeman added. "If there is a medical issue or fatigue it is different, but he is capable of playing the next important games that lie ahead".

Meanwhile, the Dutchman says that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is unlikely to be fit to play in El Clasico, which is slated for October 24.

"Since Tuesday, he has been training on the pitches and everything is going well for now", said Koeman. There is no need to set a date.
