Senate Republicans have described Twitter's decision to block a news report of Joe Biden as election interference.
Twitter said late Thursday it was changing its policy on hacked content after an outcry about its handling of an unverified political story that prompted cries of censorship from the right.
The move comes hard on the heels of the company's decision to restrict sharing of a New York Post article this week - which reported on claims that laptop hardware left at a fix shop contained emails and other data belonging to Hunter Biden, the son of US presidential candidate Joe Biden. Ted Cruz (R-TX) reaffirmed the news when he spoke to reporters Thursday morning.
Cruz said the Senate Judiciary Committee would vote next Tuesday to subpoena Dorsey to testify at the end of next week and "explain why Twitter is abusing their corporate power to silence the press".
"We want to address the concerns that there could be many unintended consequences to journalists, whistleblowers and others in ways that are contrary to Twitter's objective of serving the public conversation", she said.
It appears that Twitter will still be censoring certain material by "labeling them", as Twitter and other big tech companies have routinely done in the past. "That's what they are doing right now".
As Republicans have called for social media executives to answer for this, Judiciary Committee member Sen.
US President Donald Trump describes Jack Dorsey's company as"censors
The hearing will "consider potential campaign law violations" in support of Biden with the blocking of the article.
"The tweet for which McEnany was purportedly locked out read, "**NEW** Email from Ukrainian executive to Hunter Biden asks Hunter to "use his influence" on behalf of the firm paying him $50k/mo in email with subject "urgent issue" obtained by @nypost Father @JoeBiden was in charge of Ukraine relations at time!"
The newspaper claimed that the former vice president, who was in charge of United States policy toward Ukraine, took actions to help his son, who in 2014-2017 sat on the board of controversial Ukraine energy company Burisma.
But the outlet's source for the information raised questions. "They're trying to protect Biden", Trump said.
The Biden campaign rejected the assertions of corruption in the report, but has not denied the veracity of the underlying materials, mostly emails between Hunter Biden and business partners. So the most likely scenario is Hunter Biden's iCloud was hacked and doctored emails planted on the drive where the data could be "discovered" and leaked to the press in a ham-fisted attempt to influence the US presidential election.
