Teofimo Lopez impressed many beyond the boxing world Saturday night. The judges' scorecards look as the following: 116-112, 119-109, 117-111.

There was little doubt that Lopez deserved the win, but the consensus was that Lomachenko showed enough life in the second half of the fight to keep things competitive going into the 12th round.

Lomachenko said he believed he won the fight and disagreed with the scoring decision during a post-bout interview, according to boxing insider Dan Rafael.

The win makes Lopez (16-0, 12 KO's) the youngest man to claim all 4 championship titles, a feat he pursued from the onset of actions, stalking Lomachenko with calculated aggressiveness, focusing early attacks on Loma's mid-section, a plan that worked.

The heated confrontation compelled Lopez Sr to promise that his son would knock Lomachenko (14-2, 10 KOs) off his perch in due time.

"I had to dig deep, man".

"In the first half of the fight, he won more rounds".

But if a late statement was needed by Lopez, it was made in the 12th and final round. And every time he did want to throw (at me), I had something ready for him, at least get something thrown (at him) to stop his momentum. "We outboxed him. We gave him a clinic, you know, I'm just so glad, man, that everything that I said came into existence". That is what a true champion does: "to come up and find a way to win".

Lopez' victory has become the latest victor for Mayweather after his stunning victory in Las Vegas.

Lomachenko, who lost only once in almost 400 amateur fights and had only one loss as a pro, thought he did better than the scorecards indicated.

Lopez rocks Lomachenko with an uppercut.

That's the highest percentage of power punches landed against Lomachenko, extending a trend since he moved up from junior feather and featherweight.

Haney issued a challenge to Lopez via his Twitter page shortly after the fight, as did Ryan Garcia, another standout in the lightweight division. "So, I knew it would take time for him to catch up".

"My team, everybody throughout this whole week was talking about the fact that I'm going to be a big superstar after winning", Lopez said.

"I thank God. I am thankful and grateful".
