A man has been filmed wrestling his dog from the jaws of an alligator.
In a dramatic encounter recorded by surveillance cameras, a Florida man chased an alligator under water and rescued his 3-month-old puppy from the jaws of death.
Gunner runs free after his owner, Richard Wilbanks, saves him.
"My hands were just chewed up", he said.
Wilbanks told ABC News that the gator came out of the water "like a missile" and snatched Gunner. The video shows the man, named Richard Wilbanks, jumping into waist-deep lake water after the reptile drags his pup underwater.
Mr Wilbanks said he gave "no second thought" to rescuing his dog, adding: "He had one little puncture wound".
The footage was shot as part of a project between the Florida Wildlife Federation and the fStop Foundation, called Sharing the Landscape. "We don't just want to tolerate wildlife, but, rather, we want to thrive with wildlife on a shared landscape".
Willbanks agrees with this sentiment, saying he doesn't want the alligator removed from the pond or destroyed.
And Wilbanks said he and his family have gained a new appreciation for the wildlife around them.
"It is critical that people who live at the interface of wild land take extra precautions -dogs should be leashed and both people and pets should avoid lingering at the edge of large retention ponds where alligators are known to occupy", Budd said.
The love that we have for our pets is just wonderful and there is nothing that would match that type of love, ever.
