Projected Snowfall Totals Increase For Strong Storm Taking Aim On Area

Scattered snow showers or flurries will remain in the area at times. Sleet, ice and several inches of accumulation snow are all possible.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather warning with freezing rain in the forecast overnight through early Wednesday morning.

That includes the cities of Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, Russellville, Red Bay, Moulton, Town Creek and Athens, among others.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has also issued a winter storm warning for its northwest counties of Lamar, Marion and Winston.

There is also a parking ban all winter in Augusta, from 10 7 a.m., although it is not always enforced, according to Leslie Jones, the city's director of Public Works.

"We really didn't get too much in the way of snow in (central Maine)", said meteorologist Michael Cempa of the National Weather Service. Snow should be falling heavily in South Jersey by 8 or 9 a.m., while in North Jersey, moderate to heavy snow is likely to be accumulating no later than 10 or 11 a.m., Sullivan said.

Next week looks warmer, with temperatures expected in the 40s.

"Travel could be very hard", the National Weather Service said.

"However, by Thursday night, dry conditions are expected".

Now the official NWS forecast for northeast Suffolk calls for two to four inches of snow tomorrow, with northeast winds of 10 to 15 miles per hour, gusting to 25 miles per hour in the afternoon.

A winter storm that has pummeled much of the United States will move through the Northeast on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction across some states unaccustomed to such harsh weather.

Those same counties could face strong to severe storms later today.
