Five-star TE Arik Gilbert commits to Florida: LSU transfer becomes huge weapon for Gators

The LSU tight end said Sunday that he would be transferring to Florida.

This past season, Gilbert was fourth in receiving yards at LSU.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Gilbert will be a huge gain for the Florida Gators as he will most likely fill in for Gators tight end Kyle Pitts.

"After careful consideration, I have made a decision to commit to the University of Florida", said Gilbert.

The Marietta, Ga., native caught 35 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns before opting out.

"This is the best situation for me and I'm excited to join the family", he wrote. Pitts is expected to be a top-10 pick in the National Football League draft in April.

With all college athletes granted an additional year of eligibility amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Gilbert has four seasons remaining despite transferring to the program as a true sophomore.

Florida has bulked up its roster to get 2021 throughout the transfer portal site with Gilbert, in addition to running Demarkcus Bowman, that moved from Clemson and has been the No. 23 ranked recruit in the 2020 course.

Despite choosing Florida over Georgia and Alabama, it is believed that Gilbert transfered from LSU to be closer to home. The Gators had a great recruiting pitch for Gilbert in Pitts as the junior was unstoppable in 2020. Gilbert abruptly opted out of the season on December 9 and coach Ed Orgeron said at the time that he expected Gilbert to return in 2021.
