Cuomo: Politicians calling for him to resign are ‘reckless’

Protesters demand New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's resignation following a series of sexual harassment accusations against the Democrat and an attempted cover-up of Covid-19 deaths in the state's nursing homes

Reps Jerry Nadler and AOC leads nine powerful Democrats calling on Gov Cuomo to RESIGN

They cast an ominous shadow over the political future of the Democratic governor, who gained national prominence for his leadership during the peak of his state's Covid-19 crisis.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Friday that the president "believes that every woman who's come forward. deserves to have her voice heard, should be treated with respect and should be able to tell her story". I strongly support the ongoing investigation led by Attorney General James, the investigation led by the Assembly Judiciary Committee, and the inquiries by relevant District Attorney offices, however I personally believe these allegations have made it impossible for the Governor to effectively serve the people of ny, and I believe he should resign.

At least 14 of the 27 members of New York's United States congressional delegation have now called on Mr Cuomo to step down. "And I've always separated the two", he said, refusing to resign.

But a majority of state lawmakers are calling on him to resign, and Democratic congressional members including U.S. Reps.

On Thursday, the state's top Democrat in the state assembly launched a plan for a judiciary committee to begin an impeachment investigation.

Nadler's statement and others came after another accuser, an unidentified female aide, said Cuomo groped her at the governor's mansion previous year.

What is clear is that the standard for what constitutes grounds for resignation among many powerful Democrats is anything but uniform, and the allegations against Cuomo, notwithstanding the scandal related to the state's nursing homes, are now far more extensive than those made toward Franken. He is now facing an investigation by lawyers working with the New York Attorney General.

"The repeated accusations against the governor, and the manner in which he has responded to them, have made it impossible for him to continue to govern at this point", Nadler said.

Separate statements from more a dozen other members of New York's congressional delegation also followed on Friday. Republicans across the country have seized on the growing allegations against Cuomo to try to distract from Biden's success with the pandemic and challenge his party's well-established advantage with female voters.

One of the first allegations against Cuomo was brought forward by Lindsey Boylan, a former advisor to the governor, in December a year ago.

Andrew Cuomo confronted a stunning series of defections Friday amid allegations of sexual harassment that left the high-profile Democrat fighting for his political survival, angry and alone. Jerry Nadler, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jamaal Bowman, Mondaire Jones, Nydia Velazquez, Adriano Espaillat, Carolyn Maloney, Grace Meng, Antonio Delgado, Brian Higgins and Yvette Clarke joined Kathleen Rice, who called for Cuomo's resignation previously.

"Politicians who don't know a single fact but yet form a conclusion and an opinion are, in my opinion, reckless and unsafe", he added.

On Friday, New York Democratic Sens.

Cuomo made a name for himself a year ago as a straight-talking pragmatist in the first onslaught of the coronavirus pandemic.

Peoples reported from New York City.

The growing number of allegations of assault, harassment, and inappropriate behavior by the Governor are disturbing.

The governor has denied he ever touched anyone inappropriately, and has said he's sorry if he ever made anyone uncomfortable.

'I remain confident that Attorney General Tish James has the resources, prowess, and ability to conduct a comprehensive and determinative report.

The New York State Constitution allows for the Governor to temporarily step aside and for the Lieutenant Governor to serve as acting Governor.
