VP Harris put in charge of migrant influx as Biden faces down critics

It marks the first time that Biden has assigned a specific portfolio to Harris, who is seen as representing a younger generation in the Democratic Party and has been constantly at his side since they entered office on January 20.

US President Joe Biden turns to Vice President Kamala Harris as he meets with immigration advisers in the State Dining Room at the White House in Washington, US, on March 24, 2021.

President Joe Biden on Wednesday named Vice President Kamala Harris to lead US efforts with Mexico and Central America's Northern Triangle countries to try to stem the flow of migration to the United States.

Vice President Kamala Harris acknowledged the situation.

Obama turned to Biden in his first term to lead the White House effort to draw down USA troops in Iraq and oversee implementation of stimulus in response to the Great Recession.

She added that two Biden administration envoys were now travelling to Mexico and Guatemala where the White House says they will seek "to develop an effective and humane plan of action to manage migration". He also wants to prevent the growing humanitarian and political challenge from overshadowing his administration's ambitious legislative agenda.

Harris now has the chance to prove it - and burnish any future presidential credentials along the way.

"There is no question that this is a challenging situation", said Ms Harris. "But it is important work".

Since taking office, Mr Biden has ended construction work on Mr Trump's border wall and called for reviews of legal immigration programmes terminated by the former president.

U.S. media reports say more than 15,000 children from Central America are being held at the border due to a shortage of shelter facilities.

Biden halted construction on Trump's cherished wall on the Mexican border and has moved to wind down a controversial Trump policy, which migrant advocates say violates global conventions, in which asylum seekers are forced to wait in Mexico while their cases are heard. She has also taken an active role in encouraging Americans to get vaccinated.

Biden has assured his approach to the migrant issue will be more humane than his predecessor Donald Trump's.

"He has experience and lived through this process as vice president himself", an official said. "Whether or not the president had their back".
