"The number and nature of suspected adverse reactions reported so far are not unusual in comparison to other types of routinely used vaccines", the MHRA online statement said.

The UK cases were out of more than 18 million doses given as of 24 March.

Australian regulator the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has said previously the AstraZeneca vaccine was not tied to an increase in overall risk of blood clots, however.

Earlier this week, the European Union drugs regulator said a link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and a rare type of blood clot is possible, identifying at least 62 cases of the condition.

Lareb said the events had occurred 7 to 10 days after vaccination.

An Australian man has been admitted to hospital with a rare blood clotting disorder a few days after receiving the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.

The AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines have shown very high levels of protection against Covid-19, the agency said, adding that all vaccines and medicines have some side effects. A number of European countries have suspended the use of the jab following the detection of blood clots in the brains of vaccinated people.

When the EMA declared the vaccine "safe and effective", they resumed its use while investigations continued.

Shipments of the coronavirus vaccine from the Serum Institute to Canada have been put on hold for an indefinite period as India has temporarily stopped vaccine exports so as to cater to domestic needs.

The EMA, which has assessed data from around the world, estimates there is around a one in 100,000 risk of a CVST in people under the age of 60 who have been given the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Speaking to Reuters, the government's chief medical adviser said U.S. authorities had secured enough coronavirus inoculations to immunise the entire population and possibly administer booster shots in the autumn. Over one million people in the Netherlands are thought to have had coronavirus so far.

He said people should be particularly alert to severe and persistent headaches that occu between four and 20 days after the vaccination, which "are different to your usual pattern of headaches" and do not settle with paracetomol or other over-the-counter painkillers.

Two vaccines - developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca - are now being used in the United Kingdom to protect people against Covid-19. As per the terms of a contract signed in February, Canada is set to receive an additional 1.5 million vaccine doses from the company by mid-May, in addition to the 500,000 doses received last month as reported by Sputnik.
