The Frederick Police Department confirmed Tuesday that two people were critically injured in a shooting incident at a local business, and the suspect was later shot and killed at a nearby Army base.
Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet, a petty officer third class assigned to Fort Detrick, began shooting with a rifle inside a Navy-related business at the Riverside Tech Park, causing people inside to flee, Frederick police and Fort Detrick officials said at a news conference.
"Currently there are two victims and one suspect is down", police said in a tweet early Tuesday. A spokeswoman for Shock Trauma at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore did not immediately respond to an email asking for an update on their conditions.
With two active crime scenes, police have asked for more time before releasing details.
The shooting happened at an address where a concrete business is located and about four miles from Fort Detrick. The shooter, a Navy hospital corpsman, is deceased.
"It wasn't that long after he came through the gate" that the shooter was stopped, Hill said.
The sailor made it onto the base, where Fort Detrick police shot him, according to Fort Detrick Garrison Command.
Fort Detrick is home to the military's flagship biological defense laboratory and several federal civilian biodefense labs. "And today it did". They said he was the only shooter involved and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
