All students from the University of Cape Town (UCT) have been evacuated from the campus as an out-of-control fire is reportedly threatening the university buildings.
Enormous smoke columns could be seen from across the city billowing into the cloud-free sky over the city's southern suburbs and near the University of Cape Town (UCT).
One firefighter was injured and being treated at a hospital, according to the Cape Town fire and rescue department.
Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato said the flames damaged the Rhodes Memorial restaurant and Mostert's Mill, South Africa's oldest working windmill, which was built in 1796.
Parts of the Rhodes Memorial and a restaurant on the slopes of Devil's Peak have already been destroyed. More disruptions were expected as firefighters tried to attend.

Earlier, SANparks said that Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) have dispatched crews from NCC Wildfires to assist with fire suppression efforts.
"The fire is now out of control and we request that all onlookers please refrain from entering the area and keep the area clear for emergency vehicles to pass".
The fire is moving towards the campus, the Western Cape Government said.
Firefighting teams are battling to contain the blaze that broke out near Rhodes Memorial on Sunday morning. Local environment chief Anton Bredell said the situation was serious and the wind was picking up, which he said was a cause for concern.
