President George HW Bush released from hospital

Bush's wife, former First Lady Barbara Bush, 91, was admitted to the same hospital on January 18 as a "precaution".

Her husband was released on Monday was announced on Twitter by spokesman Jim McGrath, who said that H. W. Bush wanted to thank hospital and all his well-wishers. He is 92 years old; his wife is 91 years old. During his treatment, which included a stay in intensive care, doctors inserted a breathing tube and connected the nation's 41st president to a ventilator.

Bush, the country's oldest living ex-president, had been working with physical therapists to build strength before his release, McGrath said. "At his current rate of recovery, President Bush's physicians believe he could possibly go home over the weekend".

"Barbara and I are so sorry we can't be there for our Inauguration on January 20th", Bush wrote on Jan. 10.

The former president and first lady received many messages of support, doctors said, including from a family that hand-delivered a get-well card which hung in the former president's hospital room. The couple's 72-year marriage is the longest of any presidential pairing in American history.
